Managing section settings
Section settings can be found under
Settings > Section Settings
Permission needed to access: Administrator - Administrator or Read/Write
Leaders Access
You can see all of the Users and the access they have, along with the administrators who have all the permissions – they have a blue shield
You can also click ‘View’ to see a User’s current permissions, and remove somebody with the remove button.
You can add a new user by clicking the Add New User button where you can assign people permissions.
The permission levels are:
- No access (not able to access or view the area at all)
- Read only (view access to the area, not able to edit)
- Read and write (view and edit access to the area)
- Administrator (complete access to the area) - this is only available on certain areas
Below is a table of all the permissions and what they do.
Please note – to be an ‘Administrator’ (having a blue badge next to your name in the Leaders Access area), you need to have the highest level of permission for each section and not just the ‘Administrator’ level in ‘OSM Administration’

It is best to apply the principle of least privilege when applying permissions - not giving anybody anything more than they need to do their role (e.g. not giving a Young Leader who only completes an attendance register full administrative access). It is also suggested to have a group OSM admin (somebody that is not the GLV/Chair who can ensure that OSM can be audited/administered in their absence.
Terms
You can view and edit the terms here.
Terms allow you to separate programmes into terms, so you don’t have a huge long list
It is recommended to keep the dates close to the school terms, as that is generally how Scouting works, but the names do not matter.
When creating a term, you must not leave a gap between dates, otherwise you cannot use OSM during these times.
Best practice is to end a term the day before another one starts
To edit a term, click on it's name and it will bring up the edit menu
Nests/Lodges/Sixes/Patrols
These will be called different things based on your section but are groups of young people.
You can create as many as you like and then assign them in the Personal Details area.
To edit them, just click on their name. To delete, click on the Bin icon
Personal Details fields
This allows you to select the fields viewable and editable in the Personal Details area.
Contact Groups allows you to choose which contact groups show up in OSM (e.g. Members may be turned off for Squirrels to Scouts as there is no need for them to be used, but may be on in a Network Unit)
Attendance Register
This allows you to change what information is automatically put into the badge records when you mark badges as completed through the Attendance Register. The default is the date, which works for all badges except Staged Badges where it must be the value (e.g. for Nights Away you may put '1' or '2' based on how many nights away were completed)
Email system
This allows you to manage tracking in emails (seeing if Emails have been opened by parents), and enable mailing lists (the ability to email people in a certain category from an email client rather than through OSM)
Data Retention
For section administrators to decide how long data should be retained – the suggested is 15 years.
Data Processing Agreement
This must be signed by a member of the Group to ensure that all Data Processing and GDPR rules of OSM are understood.
Edit/Delete Section
This allows you to edit your section's settings.
Note - if you change the group name, you must change it in all of the sections.
